Why is live attenuated vaccine used in MMR vaccination?

Attenuated means the viruses in the vaccine have been weakened. Their presence helps the body develop an immune response directed at measles, mumps, and rubella. MMR combines protection against these infections in one vaccination visit. It is preventive care: it is not a treatment for someone who is currently ill with a rash, fever, swollen glands, or another possible infection.

Bring an up-to-date immunisation record and tell the clinician about prior vaccine reactions, allergies, current fever or illness, and medicines. It is particularly important to mention immune-system conditions, immune-suppressing treatment, or pregnancy, since a clinician must decide whether a live attenuated vaccine is appropriate. Follow the advice given for the planned dose and for observation after vaccination.

Seek emergency care for breathing trouble, swelling affecting the mouth or throat, collapse, or rapidly worsening severe illness. Contact a clinician promptly if there is a seizure, marked drowsiness, poor fluid intake with signs of dehydration, or fever that is causing concern. If a rash or other reaction develops and you are unsure how to manage it, speak with the vaccination provider.
