Why is levonorgestrel used in progestogen-only pill?
Short answer
Levonorgestrel is used in a progestogen-only pill because it can suppress ovulation and thicken cervical mucus, making fertilisation less likely.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the mini pill works
A progestogen-only pill contains no oestrogen. Levonorgestrel changes cervical mucus so sperm have more difficulty moving through the cervix, and it can alter the womb lining. Depending on the product and person, it may also prevent ovulation. These actions provide contraception when the tablet is taken as directed.
Bleeding may become less predictable, lighter, more frequent, or absent. The pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, and different products have different instructions for timing and missed doses.
Taking it correctly
Take the tablet at the scheduled time each day and check the packet leaflet if you are late or miss one. Vomiting, severe diarrhoea, or medicines that affect hormones can reduce protection. A pharmacist can explain whether you need additional contraception.

When to seek care
Contact a clinician if bleeding is persistent or worrying, pregnancy is possible, or you develop significant pelvic pain. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which missed-pill window applies to your product, what to do after vomiting, whether another medicine affects it, and which bleeding changes should be reviewed.
