Why is an IPL device used in an IPL photofacial?

Short answer
An IPL device is used in an IPL photofacial to deliver controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light that target selected pigment and visible blood vessels in the skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Review sun exposure and medicines
How the light interacts with skin
The device sends light through a treatment handpiece. Different skin targets absorb parts of that light, which can warm pigment or small superficial vessels while the surrounding skin is monitored and protected. The body then gradually clears or remodels the treated targets, so visible changes develop during healing rather than appearing as an instant surface peel.
IPL is not the same as a single-wavelength laser. Its settings can be adjusted for the target, skin tone and treatment area, but suitability must be assessed carefully because pigment-rich skin may respond differently to light-based treatment.
What to do before and after treatment
Tell the clinician about recent tanning, self-tanner, medicines that increase light sensitivity, cold sores and any history of dark marks after skin injury. Use the recommended sun protection and arrive with clean skin unless the clinic gives different instructions.
After treatment, follow cooling and skincare advice, avoid deliberate tanning, and do not pick at darkened pigment or small crusts. Mild warmth, redness or temporary darkening can occur, but your provider should explain the expected pattern for your skin.
When to seek medical advice
Contact the clinic if blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, spreading redness or drainage develops. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, eye pain or a sudden vision change. A persistent change in skin colour should be reviewed rather than treated with more light on your own.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what concern the IPL is intended to address, how your skin tone and recent sun exposure affect the plan, which protective measures will be used, and how many appointments may be considered. Ask when makeup, exercise and active skincare can resume.

Questions people ask
Is an IPL photofacial suitable for every skin tone?
No. The clinician must assess skin tone, tanning history and the target before choosing settings or another approach.
Is IPL the same as laser treatment?
No. IPL uses a broad range of light, while a laser generally delivers a more specific wavelength.
