Why is a hysteroscope used in diagnostic hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscope is a slim instrument with a light and camera. It passes through the vagina and cervix so the clinician can inspect the uterine cavity on a screen. This can help assess polyps, fibroids that project into the cavity, scar tissue, an unusually shaped cavity, or a possible source of bleeding.

The clinician may gently introduce fluid to open the cavity and improve the view. If an area needs further assessment, a small sample may be taken. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is an examination, although some findings can be treated during a planned procedure.

Follow instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and whether you need someone to accompany you. Tell the clinic if pregnancy is possible, if you take blood-thinning medicine, or if you have symptoms of infection. Afterward, use the advised sanitary protection and follow guidance about bathing, sex, and activity.

Contact the clinic for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening pelvic pain, or foul-smelling discharge after the examination. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can indicate infection, significant bleeding, or a rare injury that needs prompt assessment.
