Why is highly cross-linked polyethylene used in shoulder replacement?

Depending on the replacement design, the material may form the glenoid socket or another bearing surface. It is shaped to work with the opposing implant component, helping the shoulder move while spreading contact forces. Cross-linking modifies the polymer structure so the insert is engineered to withstand repeated loading and sliding.

The implant design matters alongside the material. Bone quality, the rotator cuff, soft-tissue balance, surgical positioning, and the type of shoulder replacement affect stability and movement. A replacement may be anatomic or reverse, so the role and location of the polyethylene component can differ.
