Why is an Erbium YAG laser used in erbium laser resurfacing?

The laser energy is absorbed by water in the skin. This allows the clinician to treat the surface layer and, when planned, encourage remodelling in the treated area. The depth and density of treatment can be adjusted to the concern, skin area, and desired recovery plan. Resurfacing may be considered for selected texture changes, fine lines, or certain scars, but it is not suitable for every skin condition or skin tone without careful assessment.

A treatment plan may use one session or a staged approach. Results develop as the treated surface heals and the skin remodels, so the appearance immediately afterward is not the final result.

Before treatment, discuss active rashes, cold-sore history, medicines, recent tanning, and any tendency to form raised scars. Afterward, use only the cleanser, ointment, and dressing routine recommended for you. Do not peel or scrub the treated surface. Avoid heat, direct sun, and unapproved active skincare until the clinician says the barrier has recovered; use sun protection once advised.

Call the treating clinic if redness or swelling is worsening, pain becomes difficult to control, or the area develops increasing warmth, pus-like drainage, or fever. Get urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or a widespread allergic reaction. New or persistent darkening, lightening, or textural change should be assessed rather than treated with home products.

Ask which layer will be treated, how your skin tone and medical history affect the plan, what recovery signs are expected, and when to restart your usual products. Ask whether the treatment is intended for texture, a scar, or another specific concern.
