Why is computer navigation used in total knee replacement?

The system uses information about your knee and the position of surgical instruments to create an intraoperative picture of alignment. It gives the surgeon measurements while the damaged joint surfaces are prepared and the replacement components are tested. This can support decisions about the thickness and direction of bone cuts, soft-tissue balance and the position of the components. The technology assists the surgeon; it does not perform the operation independently and does not remove the need for clinical judgment.

The aim is a knee that moves with a useful mechanical relationship between the thigh bone, shin bone and kneecap. Your surgeon may recommend navigation because of your anatomy, previous surgery, deformity or the planned implant, although conventional instruments may also be appropriate.

Ask how navigation will be used in your operation and whether it changes the planned approach. Tell the team about previous knee procedures, implanted devices, skin problems and medicines that affect bleeding or healing. Arrange the recommended home support and practice the exercises supplied by your physiotherapy team. After surgery, follow the wound, walking and exercise instructions rather than judging progress by the presence or absence of computer equipment.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening calf swelling or pain, or a new inability to bear weight. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or sudden weakness. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether navigation was used.
