Why is compression garment used in lymphoedema therapy?

Lymphoedema develops when lymph fluid is not draining effectively and collects in tissues. A correctly fitted garment provides gentle, graduated pressure, usually strongest farther from the centre of the body. This supports movement of fluid through remaining lymph pathways and reduces the tendency for swelling to return during daily activity. Garments are often one part of a wider plan that can include skin care, movement, exercise and specialist drainage techniques. Fit and fabric matter because excessive pressure can irritate skin or affect circulation.

Have the garment measured and supplied by a trained clinician or specialist provider. Put it on as instructed, check the skin for rubbing or pressure marks, and keep the material clean and dry. Do not fold or roll it into a tight band. If it feels painful, causes numbness, changes the colour or temperature of fingers or toes, or leaves persistent marks, remove it if advised and contact the lymphoedema team for a fit review. Moisturise at a suitable time so the skin is not damp when the garment is applied.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, warmth, redness, tenderness, fever or feeling unwell, as these can signal infection or another problem. Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness or a newly cold, pale or blue limb. Do not use compression over an untreated wound unless your clinical team has specifically advised it.
