Why are checkpoint inhibitor drugs used in immunotherapy?

Immune cells use checkpoint signals to avoid attacking healthy tissue. Some cancer cells can use these signals to stay hidden from immune attack. Checkpoint inhibitor drugs block selected checkpoint proteins, allowing immune cells to remain active against cancer cells for longer. The medicine does not directly destroy every cancer cell, and it only works for cancers with the right biological features.

Because the immune system can affect many organs, treatment effects may differ from those caused by chemotherapy. Inflammation can involve the skin, bowel, lungs, liver, thyroid, or other organs. Your oncology team will consider the cancer type, test results, previous treatment, and overall health before recommending immunotherapy.

Tell every healthcare professional that you receive immunotherapy, including dentists and emergency staff. Keep a symptom record and report new diarrhoea, rash, cough, breathlessness, severe tiredness, headache, changes in vision, or changes in thirst or urination. Do not assume a new symptom is unrelated, and do not start steroids or other treatments without medical advice unless an emergency clinician directs you.

Contact your cancer team quickly for worsening breathlessness, persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, yellow skin, confusion, severe headache, weakness, chest pain, or a rapidly spreading rash. Go to urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or symptoms that feel life-threatening. Early assessment can help control immune-related inflammation.

Ask which checkpoint is being targeted, why the medicine suits your cancer, how infusions are scheduled, and which symptoms require a same-day call. Discuss autoimmune conditions, transplant history, current medicines, monitoring tests, and what happens if treatment must be paused.
