Why is a breast implant used in breast reconstruction?

An implant is a soft device placed beneath the chest tissue or chest muscle to create breast contour. Some people receive it during the same operation as mastectomy; others first have a tissue expander that gradually prepares the skin and space for a later implant. The choice depends on skin quality, chest anatomy, previous or planned radiotherapy, other medical conditions, and personal preference.

An implant rebuilds shape, but it does not recreate a natural breast in every detail and it does not replace cancer treatment. The reconstructed breast may feel different from the other side, and further surgery can sometimes be needed for balance, position, or implant-related concerns. A surgeon can explain implant choices and alternatives such as reconstruction using the person’s own tissue.

Discuss the timing of reconstruction with the breast and plastic surgery teams before treatment decisions are final. Share your smoking history, medicines, previous operations, and any planned radiotherapy. After surgery, follow wound and movement instructions, attend review visits, and report changes in swelling, redness, drainage, or breast shape. Ask when bras, exercise, driving, and work can be resumed.

Contact your surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, wound separation, drainage, fever, sudden swelling, worsening pain, or a new change in the implant area. Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, or sudden one-sided arm swelling.

Ask whether an implant suits your anatomy and treatment plan, whether an expander is needed, how radiotherapy could affect reconstruction, and what alternatives exist. Discuss expected appearance and sensation, likely recovery milestones, future monitoring, and signs of implant complications.
