Why is AI embryo selection used in IVF?

During IVF, embryos can be photographed as they develop in the laboratory. An AI system may examine features such as cell division patterns, timing and visible appearance, then provide a ranking or score for the embryology team to review. The output is an aid to decision-making, not a direct test of future health and not a promise of implantation. Embryologists and fertility specialists also consider embryo development, laboratory information, genetic testing when offered, medical history and your treatment preferences.

Ask the clinic whether it uses AI routinely or only in selected cases, what images and information the system analyses, and who makes the final decision. Clarify whether the tool changes the number of embryos considered, how results are recorded and whether your consent is needed. Request a plain-language explanation of other selection methods and how the clinic handles embryos that receive similar assessments.

AI selection itself does not cause physical symptoms. After egg collection or embryo transfer, contact your fertility team urgently for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. These may need assessment for treatment-related complications and should not be attributed to an embryo-ranking result.

Ask what evidence the clinic uses for its algorithm, whether the system has been validated in its laboratory, how human review is combined with the output, and what uncertainties remain when choosing an embryo for transfer.
