Why is 3D mammography used in a mammogram?

The breast is positioned and briefly compressed while the X-ray system captures images from multiple angles. A computer combines these views into slices that can be reviewed individually. This can make it easier to distinguish a small finding from normal tissue that lies in front of or behind it. The images still require interpretation by a radiologist, and dense tissue, positioning or image quality can affect what is visible. If an area needs clarification, the report may recommend additional views, ultrasound or another assessment.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have breast implants or have a new breast symptom. On the day, avoid deodorant, powder or lotion on the breasts and underarms if your centre advises this, because some products can appear on an image. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up. Mention the exact location of a lump, pain, discharge or skin change so it can be correlated with the images.

Do not wait for routine screening if you notice a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion or a persistent one-sided change. Arrange clinical assessment even if a previous mammogram was normal. Most breast lumps are benign, but a breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, so new or changing findings deserve evaluation.

Ask whether your appointment is for screening or symptom assessment, whether 3D imaging is appropriate for you, when the report will be available and what follow-up is planned if the result is unclear.
