Why Tonsillitis Can Cause a Fever

The tonsils help recognise germs entering through the mouth and nose. When they become infected, immune cells release chemical signals that act on the temperature-control centre in the brain. The body then conserves heat and may cause shivering until it reaches the higher set point.

Fever is a very common presentation of Tonsillitis. A fever can occur with many infections and inflammatory conditions, so it should be considered alongside throat pain, swollen tonsils, cough, rash, and the overall pattern of illness.

Drink regularly, rest, and wear light comfortable clothing. Take small sips if a sore throat makes drinking unpleasant. Use a fever or pain medicine only as directed on its label or by a healthcare professional; avoid giving medicines intended for adults to children unless specifically advised.

Note changes in alertness, breathing, drinking, urination, throat pain, or rash. These observations give a clinician a clearer picture than temperature alone and can guide the next step.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, marked drowsiness or confusion, a stiff neck, a rapidly spreading rash, a seizure, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. These symptoms deserve immediate assessment regardless of the presumed cause.

Arrange a review if the fever persists, returns after improving, or comes with worsening throat pain or difficulty drinking. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may need earlier advice.

Ask what may be causing the tonsillitis, whether an examination or test is needed, and which medicine is appropriate for fever and throat pain. Share the timing of the fever, any rash, recent sick contacts, and all medicines already taken.
