Why does swimmer's ear cause ear discharge?

Swimmer's ear is inflammation of the outer ear canal. Water, scratching, earplugs, hearing devices, or attempts to remove wax can disrupt the skin that lines this narrow passage. Once that barrier is irritated, moisture and bacteria or fungi may contribute to swelling, tenderness, and fluid from the canal.

Ear Discharge is a very common presentation of Swimmer's Ear. The fluid may be clear, cloudy, yellowish, or mixed with skin debris, and it can dry into crust near the ear opening. Discharge can also come from problems behind the eardrum or from a foreign object, so an examination is useful when it is new or persistent.

Keep the ear dry while it is sore or discharging. During washing, avoid directing water into the ear, and do not swim until a clinician says it is appropriate. Wipe only the outer ear gently with a clean cloth. Cotton buds, fingers, hairpins, and other objects can push debris deeper and damage inflamed skin.

A clinician can look into the ear, clear debris safely when needed, and decide whether prescription ear drops are suitable. Tell them if you have a known eardrum perforation, ear surgery, diabetes, or a weakened immune system before using drops.

Arrange prompt assessment for discharge with significant ear pain, fever, swelling around the ear, reduced hearing, dizziness, or symptoms that are getting worse. Seek urgent care for severe pain, redness or swelling spreading beyond the ear, weakness of the face, or if you feel generally unwell. Children with discharge should also be assessed.
