Why does stroke cause blurred vision?

Vision depends on signals travelling from each eye through the optic pathways to the brain. A stroke can injure the part of the brain that interprets those signals or disrupt the pathways carrying them. The result may be blur, missing areas of vision, double vision, or difficulty judging where objects are. Blurred Vision is a common presentation of Stroke, but blurred sight also has many causes unrelated to stroke.

Note when the change began and whether it appeared suddenly. Do not drive yourself if your sight is impaired. If the symptom is new, especially alongside facial drooping, arm weakness, confusion, balance trouble, or trouble speaking, seek emergency help immediately. If you have already been assessed, follow the care plan and use any glasses or visual aids as advised.

Treat sudden vision change as an emergency, even if it improves after a short time. Call emergency services immediately for sudden blurred or lost vision, a severe new headache, weakness or numbness on one side, slurred speech, or difficulty walking. These symptoms need prompt assessment because treatment decisions can depend on when they started.
