Why does rubella cause fever?

Fever is part of a whole-body immune response, not simply heat produced by the virus. Immune chemicals act on the brain's temperature-control centre, which can cause feeling cold or shivery as the body temperature rises. Fever is a common presentation of Rubella, although fever has many other causes.

Rubella can also be associated with a rash, swollen glands, tiredness, or aches. A clinician can assess the combination of symptoms and relevant contact or vaccination history.

Rest, drink regularly, and wear light comfortable clothing. Use a fever medicine only if it is suitable for the person's age and health situation, following the label or a clinician's advice. Limit close contact with others while unwell, and contact a healthcare service for guidance before attending in person if rubella is a possibility, particularly around pregnancy.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, confusion, a seizure, a severe headache with a stiff neck, persistent vomiting, or a rapidly worsening condition. Contact a clinician promptly for a fever with a rash in pregnancy, in a newborn, or in someone with a weakened immune system. These groups may need tailored assessment and advice about exposure.

Ask whether testing is appropriate, how long to avoid close contact, and which symptoms should prompt reassessment. Tell the clinician when the fever began, whether a rash appeared, any recent contacts with illness, and whether pregnancy could be relevant.
