Why does pancreatitis cause nausea?

The pancreas releases substances that help break down food. When it becomes inflamed, its normal work is disturbed and the surrounding upper abdomen can become irritated. Strong abdominal pain, slowed stomach emptying, and changes in the gut's nerve signals can all make you feel sick. Nausea is a common presentation of Pancreatitis, but nausea has many possible causes and needs to be considered alongside the full pattern of symptoms.

Pain may spread through to the back and may feel worse after eating. Vomiting, poor appetite, fever, bloating, or a tender abdomen can occur as part of the same illness.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pancreatitis is suspected or has already been diagnosed and nausea is interfering with drinking. A clinician can check hydration, pain, abdominal findings, and whether tests or hospital treatment are needed. Until you are assessed, take small sips of fluid only if you can keep them down, avoid alcohol, and do not take non-prescribed remedies to mask severe pain.

Write down when the pain and nausea began, what you have been able to drink, any vomiting, and medicines or recent alcohol use. This information can help the clinical team assess the episode.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or trouble breathing. These symptoms need assessment because pancreatitis and dehydration can become serious. Sudden chest pain or severe breathlessness should be treated as an emergency.

Ask what may have triggered the inflammation, whether you need blood tests or imaging, which pain and nausea treatments are suitable, and what changes should prompt a return to hospital. If this is not your first episode, ask how to reduce the chance of another attack.
