Why does overactive bladder cause leaking urine?

A healthy bladder stores urine while its muscle stays relaxed. With overactive bladder, that muscle may contract before the bladder is ready to empty. The contraction can produce urgency, frequent trips to the toilet, or waking at night to urinate.

Leaking Urine is a very common presentation of Overactive Bladder. Leakage linked to urgency is often called urge incontinence. It differs from leakage that happens only when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising, which can have a different mechanism. Bladder irritation, constipation, urinary infection, some medicines, and nerve or pelvic-floor problems can also affect bladder control, so the pattern matters.

Keep a brief bladder diary: note drinks, toilet visits, urgency, leakage, and activities when symptoms occur. This can reveal triggers and gives a clinician useful detail. Avoiding a drink that clearly worsens urgency, treating constipation, and using timed toilet visits may help. Pelvic-floor exercises and bladder training are commonly discussed treatment approaches; a clinician or pelvic-health physiotherapist can check that you are doing them correctly.

Arrange an assessment if leakage is new, bothersome, or changing. A clinician may ask about pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, bowel symptoms, medicines, fluid intake, and urinary burning, and may test a urine sample.

Seek prompt medical advice for blood in the urine, fever or chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, or painful urination with worsening symptoms. Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have new leg weakness or numbness, or lose control of urine together with numbness around the genitals. These features can point to problems needing assessment beyond routine bladder-management advice.

Ask: Is my leakage caused by urgency, physical pressure, infection, or more than one factor? Could any medicine, constipation, or pelvic-floor change be contributing?
