Why does obstructive sleep apnoea cause snoring?

Short answer
Obstructive sleep apnoea causes snoring because air moving through a narrowed upper airway makes the soft tissues of the throat vibrate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Sound source
- Vibrating throat tissues create the noise.
- Key observation
- Breathing pauses or gasping deserve assessment.
Why the sound can change
Muscles that help hold the tongue and throat open relax during sleep. If the airway becomes tight, airflow turns more turbulent and tissues such as the soft palate can flutter. Snoring may become louder or uneven as the space narrows. With obstructive sleep apnoea, airflow can pause before the brain briefly rouses the body and breathing resumes. Snoring is a very common presentation of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, but snoring alone does not identify its cause.
What to look for and discuss
Ask anyone who hears you sleep whether they notice pauses, gasping, choking or restless movements. Also note unrefreshing sleep, morning headache and sleepiness during quiet daytime activities. Take these observations to a clinician, who can assess your nose, mouth and throat, review medicines and decide whether a sleep study would be helpful. Avoid alcohol close to bedtime if it makes your snoring or breathing worse.
When to seek help
Book an appointment when snoring is frequent and accompanied by witnessed pauses in breathing, waking breathlessness or daytime drowsiness. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden confusion. Do not drive when you are struggling to stay awake, as reduced alertness can affect reaction time.
Useful appointment questions
Ask whether the pattern suggests obstructive sleep apnoea, what test could assess nighttime breathing, and which treatment choices may suit your anatomy and health needs. Ask how to tell whether treatment is improving daytime alertness as well as snoring.

Questions people ask
Why is snoring sometimes interrupted by silence?
A pause can occur when the airway is temporarily obstructed, followed by a brief arousal that restores airflow.
Does every person who snores have obstructive sleep apnoea?
No. Snoring can occur without obstructive sleep apnoea, so associated symptoms and assessment matter.
