Why does migraine cause facial pain and pressure?

Migraine pain is often carried through branches of the trigeminal nerve, which also carry sensation from much of the face. This can produce aching, pressure, tenderness, or pain around the brow, eyes, bridge of the nose, cheeks, or upper teeth. Nasal stuffiness or watery eyes may occur during migraine and can add to the impression of sinus pressure.

Facial pressure does not by itself identify its cause; infections, dental problems, jaw disorders, eye conditions, and nerve pain can also affect the face. Write down the exact location of discomfort, whether it is one-sided, how it begins, and any congestion, tooth pain, or visual symptoms. This information helps separate migraine features from other causes of facial pain.

Seek urgent assessment for facial swelling, a swollen or painful eye, vision loss, a severe sudden headache, fever with a stiff neck, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, or a rash with eye symptoms. Get prompt dental or medical care for facial pain with swelling of the gums, jaw, or neck, especially if swallowing or breathing is difficult.

Ask whether the pattern supports migraine, whether sinus, dental, eye, or jaw causes need checking, which treatment to use early in an attack, and what signs would require urgent reassessment.
