Why does malignant pleural effusion cause shortness of breath?

The pleural space is the thin gap between the lung and chest wall. Cancer-related fluid can collect there and press on the lung from outside. The lung then has less room to fill with air, so ordinary activity may feel more demanding and some people notice a dry cough or chest heaviness.
