Why does lung cancer cause shortness of breath?

A tumour may partly block an airway, preventing air from reaching part of the lung. It can also reduce how much healthy lung tissue is available for oxygen exchange. Fluid may collect in the space around a lung and limit its expansion. Shortness of Breath is a very common presentation of Lung Cancer, but breathlessness has many possible causes.

The sensation can range from needing more effort for usual activities to feeling unable to take a satisfying breath at rest. Infection, asthma, heart conditions, anaemia, anxiety, and blood clots can also cause breathlessness and need different care.

Stop and sit upright when breathlessness starts. Pace activities, use a comfortable forward-leaning position, and avoid smoke or strong fumes. If symptoms are new or worsening, contact a clinician promptly rather than trying to manage them only at home. Keep a note of triggers, how quickly symptoms came on, cough, wheeze, fever, pain, and swelling in a leg.

Medical care may include checking oxygen levels, listening to the chest, and using tests to identify whether an airway problem, fluid, infection, or another cause is contributing.

Call emergency services now for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking full sentences, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or sudden worsening. Prompt assessment is also needed for breathlessness at rest, coughing up blood, or new swelling and pain in one leg.

Ask what may be driving the breathlessness, which tests will clarify the cause, and whether there are practical ways to make movement and sleep more comfortable.
