Why does laryngitis cause hoarse voice?

Your vocal folds sit inside the larynx, or voice box. Air from the lungs passes between them and their controlled vibration creates sound. During laryngitis, irritation or infection can leave these delicate folds puffy, dry or coated with mucus. Their edges no longer meet and move evenly, so the voice may sound raspy, breathy, lower in pitch or tire quickly.

Hoarse Voice is a very common presentation of Laryngitis. Hoarseness also has other causes, including voice overuse, reflux, smoking and medicines that dry the throat.

Give your voice a relative rest: speak softly when needed, but avoid whispering, which can strain the voice box. Drink fluids regularly, avoid smoke and smoky places, and use humidified air if indoor air feels dry. Limit repeated throat clearing; a sip of water or swallowing can be gentler. If reflux triggers throat symptoms, avoiding late meals and alcohol may help.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, or rapidly increasing neck swelling. Arrange medical assessment if hoarseness lasts beyond a few weeks, keeps returning, follows a neck injury, or occurs with a neck lump, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss or persistent pain. Children with breathing difficulty need prompt assessment.
