Why does hypoglycaemia cause blurred vision?

When blood glucose falls, the brain has less immediately available fuel. This can make focusing difficult and may change how clearly you process what you see. Blurred Vision is a common presentation of Hypoglycaemia, but blurred sight also has many other possible causes. It may occur with sweating, shaking, hunger, palpitations, headache, confusion, or difficulty concentrating.

Symptoms can develop quickly, particularly when a meal has been delayed, after unexpected activity, or when glucose-lowering medicine has more effect than expected. The pattern and the circumstances matter when working out the cause.

If you are awake and can swallow safely, follow the low-glucose plan given by your clinician. Take a fast-acting source of carbohydrate as directed, then recheck your glucose if you have a meter or monitor. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or climbing until your vision and thinking feel normal again.

After the episode, have a suitable meal or snack if your treatment plan advises it. Record the time, food intake, activity, medicines, glucose reading, and symptoms; this can help identify a preventable pattern.

Seek emergency help if someone is unconscious, having a seizure, cannot swallow safely, is severely confused, or does not improve after their prescribed rescue treatment. Do not give food or drink to a person who is drowsy or unconscious. Get prompt medical advice for repeated episodes, a new visual disturbance that persists, or symptoms without an obvious trigger.

Ask whether your medicine timing, dose, meals, alcohol intake, illness, or exercise plan could be contributing. Also ask what glucose level should trigger your personal action plan and whether you should carry a prescribed rescue treatment.
