Why does hypertension cause headache?

Blood pressure is the force of blood against artery walls. When it is very high, changes in vessel tension and pressure regulation may contribute to head pain. Headache is a common presentation of Hypertension, yet headaches also have many other causes, including dehydration, migraine, infection, eye strain, stress, and poor sleep.

The pattern matters. Note where the pain is, when it began, whether it is new for you, and whether it comes with visual changes, weakness, nausea, chest discomfort, or breathlessness. These details help a clinician decide what needs checking.

If you have access to a blood-pressure monitor, sit quietly before taking a reading and record the result, the time, and any symptoms. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, and recent missed doses to an appointment. Do not change prescribed blood-pressure medicine on your own because stopping or doubling a dose can cause problems.

Arrange a routine review if headaches recur or if home readings are repeatedly raised. A clinician may review your technique, medicines, lifestyle factors, and other possible causes of head pain.

Seek urgent medical care for a sudden, severe headache, especially if it reaches peak intensity quickly or follows a head injury. Get emergency help for headache with confusion, fainting, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, loss of vision, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or a seizure.

A headache that is new during pregnancy, persists despite usual measures, or is accompanied by repeated vomiting also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether your readings and headache pattern suggest a need to adjust treatment, whether your monitor cuff fits correctly, and which symptoms should prompt urgent help. It can also help to ask how often to measure at home and how to share the record with your care team.
