Why does hiatus hernia cause excessive burping?

Short answer
A hiatus hernia can increase burping by making reflux and trapped stomach gas more noticeable after eating or drinking.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common companion
- Burping may occur with reflux, bloating or a sour taste.
- Pattern to track
- Meal timing and fizzy drinks can be useful details to record.
Why burping may become frequent
The diaphragm normally helps support the junction between the oesophagus and stomach. With a hiatus hernia, that junction can sit differently, making it easier for stomach contents to move upward. Swallowed air or gas in the stomach may then be released as burping, often alongside bloating, sour taste or heartburn.
Excessive Burping is a common presentation of Hiatus Hernia, but burping can also increase with fizzy drinks, eating quickly, chewing gum, anxiety or other digestive conditions. The pattern, rather than burping alone, helps a clinician understand what is happening.
Ways to reduce triggers
Try smaller meals and slow down when eating. Limiting carbonated drinks, avoiding straws and taking breaks between bites can reduce swallowed air for some people. Staying upright after meals and avoiding meals close to bedtime may also help if reflux accompanies the burping.
Arrange a routine review if the symptom is frequent, painful or disrupting meals. Bring a note of foods, drinks, timing, reflux symptoms and medicines; this can help identify whether a treatment review or further assessment is needed.
When to get medical help sooner
Seek urgent care for severe or crushing chest pain, trouble breathing, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or repeated vomiting. Contact a clinician promptly if burping occurs with trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, unintentional weight loss, anaemia symptoms or a new change in bowel habit.
Questions for your appointment
You may ask whether reflux is contributing, which eating habits are most relevant to your pattern, whether medicines could be involved, and whether symptoms warrant investigation of the oesophagus or stomach.

Questions people ask
Can eating quickly make burping worse?
Yes. Eating quickly can increase the amount of air swallowed, which may lead to more burping.
Is frequent burping an emergency?
Not usually by itself, but urgent assessment is needed with severe pain, bleeding, breathing trouble or repeated vomiting.
