Why does heat stroke cause vomiting?

When the body is overwhelmed by heat, blood is directed toward the skin to release heat and away from organs involved in digestion. At the same time, overheating can affect the part of the brain that controls nausea and alertness. Vomiting is a common presentation of Heat Stroke, alongside symptoms such as confusion, collapse, or altered behaviour.

Vomiting also removes fluid and salts, which can make heat illness harder to manage. It does not by itself identify the cause, because vomiting can happen with infections, medicines, pregnancy, and many other conditions.

If heat stroke is suspected, call emergency services and begin cooling immediately. Move the person into shade or air conditioning, remove extra clothing, wet the skin with cool water, and fan them. A cool bath may be used if it can be done safely.

Do not force fluids, food, or medicines by mouth if the person is confused, fainting, very drowsy, or actively vomiting. Keep them on their side if they are vomiting to help protect their airway.

Seek emergency care immediately for vomiting with severe heat exposure when there is confusion, a seizure, fainting, inability to drink safely, very hot skin, or rapid deterioration. These features can signal heat stroke. Ongoing vomiting also needs prompt assessment because dehydration can worsen quickly.

Ask whether the episode was heat exhaustion or heat stroke, whether blood tests or follow-up are needed, and how to plan safer outdoor activity. Mention all medicines and any medical conditions that may affect sweating, hydration, or temperature control.
