Why does eczema herpeticum cause crusting skin?

Eczema herpeticum is a viral infection affecting skin that is already weakened by eczema or another barrier problem. Small, often painful blisters may break open. Clear or blood-stained fluid then dries on the surface, forming a crust. The surrounding skin may look red, swollen, or raw, and new lesions can appear near older ones. Crusting does not show how deep the infection is, and a crust can conceal active lesions beneath it.

Arrange urgent medical assessment if eczema herpeticum is suspected, because antiviral treatment may be needed promptly. Do not pick, peel, or scrub the crusts. Wash hands after touching the area, use a separate towel, and avoid close skin contact until a clinician advises that it is safe. Keep taking prescribed eczema treatment only as directed; avoid applying unfamiliar creams over open or blistered skin.

Seek same-day care for rapidly appearing painful blisters, spreading crusting, fever, marked tiredness, or skin around the eyes that is blistered or painful. Eye symptoms, confusion, faintness, or difficulty drinking require emergency help. These features can signal a more extensive infection or involvement of a sensitive area.

Ask whether the crusted areas need testing, which antiviral treatment is appropriate, whether your eczema medicines should change temporarily, and how to protect household contacts. Mention when the blisters began, whether pain or fever is present, and whether the rash is near your eyes.
