Why does eclampsia cause vision changes in pregnancy?

Eclampsia is a pregnancy-related emergency involving seizures, often in the setting of pre-eclampsia. Changes in blood flow and pressure can affect the brain, including regions involved in vision. This may cause blurred or double vision, flashing lights, spots, difficulty focusing, or a temporary dimming of sight. The visual symptom can happen before, during, or after a seizure, and symptoms may continue after delivery.

Vision Changes in Pregnancy is a common presentation of Eclampsia. Vision symptoms can also have other causes, so they should not be self-diagnosed, but sudden or severe changes require immediate assessment.

If you are pregnant or have recently given birth and develop new visual symptoms, stop driving and seek emergency medical help. Tell the team that you are pregnant or recently postpartum, describe when the change began, and mention headache, upper abdominal pain, swelling, breathlessness, or reduced fetal movement if present. Do not wait for the symptom to pass or try to manage it with home remedies.

Call emergency services immediately for a seizure, loss of consciousness, severe headache, sudden visual loss, confusion, weakness, difficulty speaking, severe breathlessness, or severe upper abdominal pain. Eclampsia can occur during pregnancy or after birth, so the need for urgent care does not end at delivery.
