Why does dehydration cause painful urination?

When the body needs to conserve water, urine often becomes darker, stronger smelling, and less frequent. Passing concentrated urine can create burning or discomfort for some people. Painful Urination is a common presentation of Dehydration, especially when there are other signs of fluid loss such as thirst or dry mouth.

Burning when passing urine can also happen with a urinary tract infection, sexually transmitted infection, kidney stone, vaginal irritation, or prostate problem. Fluid loss should not be assumed to explain pain when other symptoms are present.

Drink fluids gradually through the day and avoid becoming overheated. Water is suitable for many people; a rehydration drink may be useful after vomiting, diarrhoea, or heavy sweating. Avoid alcohol while symptoms are present. Notice whether urine becomes paler and less irritating as your fluid intake returns to normal.

Do not use leftover antibiotics or treatments prescribed for another person. If you have a health condition that requires a fluid limit, follow your existing plan and contact your care team for advice tailored to you.

Arrange prompt medical advice for painful urination with fever, chills, lower abdominal pain, back or side pain, blood in the urine, discharge, sores, or a new need to urinate urgently. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, become confused, faint, develop severe pain, or cannot keep fluids down. Pregnancy and symptoms in a child also warrant timely assessment.

Ask whether a urine test is needed and whether your symptoms could point to infection, stones, or another cause. Tell the clinician about fluid losses, recent sexual contact if relevant, medicines, pregnancy, urine colour, fever, and any pain in the back or lower abdomen.
