Why does dehydration cause cloudy urine?

When the body has less fluid available, the kidneys conserve water. The smaller volume of urine is more concentrated, which can make its colour deeper and its contents easier to see. Cloudy Urine is a very common presentation of Dehydration. It may occur with thirst, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, tiredness, or passing urine less often.

Cloudiness is not specific to dehydration. Urinary infections, crystals, discharge, blood, and some foods or medicines can also change urine appearance. Persistent cloudiness or new urinary symptoms deserve a clinical review.

If you can drink, take regular small sips of water and increase fluids gradually. A rehydration drink may be useful after substantial fluid loss from vomiting or diarrhoea; ask a pharmacist or clinician which option suits your age and health needs. Monitor whether you feel less thirsty or dizzy and whether urine becomes lighter as you rehydrate.

Seek urgent medical care if you cannot keep fluids down, are fainting, confused, very weak, passing very little urine, or have severe diarrhoea or vomiting. Arrange medical advice promptly for cloudy urine with burning when passing urine, fever, flank pain, visible blood, pregnancy, or symptoms that continue despite drinking fluids.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration alone or whether a urine test is needed to look for infection or blood. Mention recent vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exposure, regular medicines, and any condition that limits how much fluid you can safely drink.
