Why does concussion cause headache?

A concussion can affect how the brain processes signals after a hit, fall, or sudden movement. Head and neck muscles may also tighten, and the injury can make light, noise, concentration, or movement aggravate pain. Headache is a very common presentation of Concussion. A headache has many possible causes; it should not be used alone to decide whether someone has concussion. The details of the injury and any accompanying symptoms matter.

Stop sport, driving, and other activities that could lead to another head impact until you have been assessed and advised about returning. Have a responsible adult observe you after the injury if possible. Rest in a calm environment, then return to ordinary activities gradually as symptoms allow and as a clinician advises. Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs, which can mask changes in symptoms. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain medicine is suitable after a head injury.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately for a worsening or severe headache, repeated vomiting, seizure, increasing confusion, unusual behaviour, weakness or numbness, slurred speech, unequal pupils, loss of consciousness, or fluid or blood from the nose or ears after a head injury. Seek urgent assessment if the person is taking blood-thinning medicine, has a bleeding disorder, or is very young or older.

Describe exactly how the injury happened, whether there was loss of consciousness or memory gap, and when the headache began. Ask when work, school, screens, exercise, and driving can be resumed, and what changes should prompt immediate reassessment.
