Why does childhood cancer cause easy bruising?

Platelets help form an early plug after a small blood vessel is damaged. When their number is low or they do not work as expected, bruises or tiny red-purple skin spots can appear more readily. Easy Bruising is a common presentation of Childhood Cancer.

Children often bruise during ordinary play, particularly on shins and knees. Bruising can also follow injury, medicines, infections, inherited bleeding conditions, or other blood-related problems.

A bruise does not by itself identify childhood cancer. Clinicians consider its pattern, whether there is bleeding elsewhere, the child's energy and general health, and may arrange an examination and blood tests when indicated.

Make a note of where bruises appear, whether there was an injury, when they were first seen, and any associated symptoms such as fever, unusual tiredness, bone pain, pallor, or nosebleeds. Take photographs over time if this helps show a changing pattern.

Arrange a timely medical review for unexplained, frequent, or unusually large bruises. Do not give aspirin unless a clinician specifically recommends it, because it can affect platelet function.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, blood in vomit, urine, or stool, a severe headache after a head injury, marked sleepiness, confusion, or difficulty breathing.

Get prompt assessment for widespread unexplained bruising, pinpoint red-purple spots that do not fade when pressed, repeated nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or a child who looks very unwell. These signs need assessment regardless of their cause.

Ask what features of the bruising are concerning, whether blood tests are needed, what medicines to avoid, and which new bleeding or illness symptoms should lead you to seek help straight away.
