Why do cervical polyps cause bleeding between periods?

A cervical polyp is a small growth on the cervix. Its surface can be fragile, and minor irritation may lead to spotting between menstrual periods. Bleeding Between Periods is a common presentation of Cervical Polyps. This symptom does not establish the cause: hormonal contraception, pregnancy, infection, fibroids, and other cervical or uterine changes can also alter bleeding.

The timing and amount can vary. Bleeding may appear as pink or brown spotting, or as red blood. A clinician may use a speculum examination and testing to look for a polyp and rule out other explanations.

Book an assessment when bleeding between periods is new, recurrent, or different from your usual cycle. Keep a note of the dates, amount, colour, relation to sex, contraceptive use, pain, discharge, and any chance of pregnancy. This information helps the clinician choose appropriate examination and tests.

If a polyp is visible, removal may be offered when it causes symptoms or when its appearance needs clarification. Never attempt to pull or cut a cervical growth yourself.

Get urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, dizziness, fever, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. These warning features need assessment rather than observation at home.
