Why does cancer of unknown primary cause unexplained weight loss?

Unexplained Weight Loss is a common presentation of Cancer of Unknown Primary. The body's immune response may release signals that change appetite and metabolism. A person may feel full quickly, tired or unwell, while pain, nausea, altered taste, constipation, swallowing difficulty or treatment effects make eating harder. Inflammation can also increase the use and breakdown of muscle and fat. Because the original tumour site is not known, the reasons for weight loss must be assessed from the whole clinical picture.

Weight loss can reduce strength and make daily activities more difficult. Tracking food and fluid intake, symptoms, weight trends and physical function gives the care team useful information without assuming that the symptom identifies a particular cancer.

Tell the oncology team about any unplanned change in weight, appetite or strength. Ask for help with nausea, pain, mouth problems, constipation, diarrhoea, swallowing or low mood, because treating these barriers may improve intake. A dietitian can recommend practical meals and drinks suited to symptoms and treatment. Small frequent meals and gentle movement may help if the team considers them safe. Check before using supplements or herbal products.

Call promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing much less urine, become dizzy on standing, or are too weak to manage usual activities. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, choking, or sudden inability to swallow. During treatment, fever or persistent vomiting also needs timely clinical advice because dehydration and infection can worsen weakness.
