Why does cancer of unknown primary cause new lump or swelling?

New Lump or Swelling is a common presentation of Cancer of Unknown Primary. Cancer cells can travel from an original site that has not been identified and settle in lymph nodes or other tissues. As cells multiply, the area may become more noticeable, firm or uncomfortable. Swelling can also reflect fluid buildup, inflammation or an infection, so a new mass needs examination rather than self-diagnosis.

The location, texture, movement and speed of change help clinicians decide which tests are useful. Imaging can show the mass and nearby structures, while a sample can identify the cell type. Those findings may guide a focused search for where the cancer began and help select treatment.

Record when the lump appeared, whether it is growing, and whether it changes with meals, movement or illness. Tell the oncology team about pain, skin changes, fever, night sweats, cough, swallowing problems or reduced appetite. Keep scheduled examinations and tests, and ask before applying heat or taking anti-inflammatory medicines if a biopsy is planned. Do not squeeze or repeatedly massage the area.

Get urgent help for swelling that interferes with breathing or swallowing, sudden facial or neck pressure, fainting, severe pain, heavy bleeding or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact the care team promptly when a known lump changes quickly, new swelling appears, or fever occurs during cancer treatment. Early review can identify infection, obstruction or another problem needing specific care.
