Why does an atypical mole cause a changing mole?

An atypical mole may be larger or less symmetrical than an ordinary mole, with an irregular outline or several shades. Change can involve growth, darkening, fading, new colour areas, a raised portion, scaling, crusting, bleeding, or persistent itch. Some changes are benign, including irritation from clothing or normal mole evolution, but visual inspection alone cannot identify the cause.

Compare the mole with its own earlier appearance rather than judging it only against nearby moles. A clear photograph with a date and a familiar object for scale can help show whether its features are evolving.

Arrange a skin examination when a mole changes, especially if the change is new, uneven, or continues. Do not pick, shave, or repeatedly irritate it. Protect the area from sun and keep a simple record of colour, border, size, and surface changes. A clinician may examine it with magnification and decide whether monitoring or removal is appropriate.

Seek prompt dermatology advice for a mole that is changing, bleeding without clear injury, forming a persistent crust, becoming painful, or developing a markedly different area. Do not wait for symptoms if its shape or colour is evolving. Urgent care is appropriate for bleeding that will not stop with direct pressure.
