Why does atopic dermatitis cause crusting skin?

Atopic Dermatitis can make the skin inflamed, itchy and fragile. Scratching may create tiny openings that ooze clear or slightly yellow fluid. As that fluid dries, it forms a crust over the irritated area. Flaking, dried moisturiser or blood from a scratch can add to the appearance. Crusting Skin is a common presentation of Atopic Dermatitis, but a new or rapidly increasing crust deserves attention because infection can also cause oozing, pain and yellow or honey-coloured crusts. The surrounding redness, warmth and tenderness help a clinician judge what is happening.

Do not pick or scrape the crust away. Gently rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry and apply the treatment recommended for your eczema. A fragrance-free moisturiser can support nearby dry skin, while a clean dressing can reduce rubbing and scratching. Wash hands before and after touching the area, and avoid sharing towels. If the crust is spreading, painful or repeatedly wet, arrange a clinical assessment rather than trying several over-the-counter products.

Contact a clinician promptly if crusting appears with increasing warmth, swelling, pain, pus, fever or redness that is spreading. Review is also sensible when the area keeps weeping, affects the eyes or does not improve with your eczema plan. Emergency care is needed for breathing difficulty or sudden swelling of the face, lips or tongue.

Ask whether the crust is dried eczema fluid, blood or a possible infection, whether a swab or prescription treatment is needed, and how to protect the area while it heals.
