Why does atopic dermatitis cause dark circles?

Atopic dermatitis can inflame the thin skin around the eyes and cause dryness, scaling or itch. Repeated rubbing and scratching may make the area look deeper in colour or more shadowed. Swelling can also change the way light falls beneath the eyes, while visible dryness makes texture more noticeable. Dark Circles is a common presentation of Atopic Dermatitis, but under-eye darkness may also reflect normal skin variation, tired appearance, allergies or irritation from products. The colour does not by itself show how active the dermatitis is or confirm its cause.

Avoid rubbing, scrubs, fragranced creams and unapproved lightening products near the eyelids. Use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser suited to the eye area and apply it gently without getting it into the eye. Cool compresses may ease itch and swelling. Identify triggers such as fragranced cosmetics, hair products or airborne irritants with a clinician's help. A prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment may be appropriate, but eyelid skin is delicate, so do not use steroid or other medicated creams there without specific instructions.

Arrange an assessment if darkening is new, one-sided, rapidly changing or accompanied by a persistent rash. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision change, marked swelling, light sensitivity, discharge or blisters. A clinician can separate eyelid dermatitis from infection, allergy and other causes, then choose treatment that protects the skin and eyes.
