Why does allergic rhinitis cause nosebleed?

Allergy inflammation makes the lining of the nose swollen and itchy. Repeated wiping, scratching inside the nose, or hard nose blowing can break small surface vessels. Dry indoor air may make the lining more likely to crack. Nosebleed is a common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis, though bleeding can also have other explanations.

Some nasal sprays can cause dryness or bleeding when the spray is directed at the septum, the central wall inside the nose. Blood-thinning medicines and certain medical conditions can also affect bleeding, so recurrent episodes deserve individual advice.

For an active nosebleed, sit upright and lean forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose just below the bony bridge and breathe through your mouth. Keep steady pressure without repeatedly checking, because lifting the fingers can disturb a forming clot. Do not tilt your head back, as blood can run into the throat.

Once bleeding has stopped, avoid picking, vigorous blowing, and heavy straining for the rest of the day. Saline spray or a small amount of a suitable moisturising nasal product may reduce dryness. Ask a clinician or pharmacist how to use any nasal spray, including aiming it outward from the septum.

Get urgent care if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes faintness or breathing difficulty, or does not stop after sustained firm pressure. Seek medical advice for repeated nosebleeds, bleeding while taking a blood thinner, easy bruising, or a blocked nose on one side. A clinician can check the lining and review medicines.

Ask whether allergy inflammation, spray technique, dryness, or a medicine may be contributing. Bring a note of when bleeding occurs, which side it comes from, and any nasal products or regular medicines you use.
