What white lines through nails can mean

A line crossing the nail from side to side may have formed when growth was briefly disturbed near the nail root. It can then move toward the tip as the nail grows. Repeated pressure, picking, illness around the nail, or a manicure can contribute. If the line is accompanied by roughness, pits, thickening, crumbling, lifting, or material under the nail, conditions such as nail fungus or nail psoriasis become part of the clinical assessment. The same appearance can have different causes, so colour alone is not diagnostic.

Several nails changing at a similar time, or a line that remains fixed while the nail grows, is worth documenting. Note tenderness, swelling, skin rashes, and any recent injury or change in nail products.
