White Hair Growth After Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata can interrupt hair production in defined patches. When a follicle becomes active again, it may first make a white or grey strand because pigment production has not resumed at the same pace as hair production. The strand may start thin, then become thicker. This appearance can occur alongside improving density, but it does not by itself prove that the condition is inactive.

Check for smooth areas of missing hair, short tapered or broken hairs, scalp scale, and changes in nails. These observations help distinguish recovering white hair from ongoing hair loss or another scalp problem. A clinician may use magnification to assess follicle openings and hair shafts.

Use gentle shampooing, limit traction from braids or extensions, and avoid scratching or repeated chemical treatments while the scalp is sensitive. Keep a simple photo record and note whether the white strands are becoming denser or whether another patch appears. Depending on activity and extent, treatment discussions can include topical corticosteroids, steroid injection into the skin, oral corticosteroid treatment, or JAK inhibitor treatment.

Contact a dermatologist if white growth is followed by fresh bald patches, rapid shedding, eyebrow or eyelash loss, scalp pain, marked redness, or scaling. Seek urgent help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing trouble, or a severe reaction after treatment. Stable white regrowth can usually be reviewed in a planned appointment.
