Which specialist treats vertebral compression fracture?

A vertebral compression fracture is a collapse or wedging injury in one of the spine bones. Lower Back Pain or Upper Back Pain may occur, particularly after a fall, lifting event, or minor movement in a fragile spine. The specialist assesses tenderness, posture, movement, nerve function, and imaging. Osteoporosis is a possible underlying contributor and may need separate assessment.

Arrange medical review rather than returning quickly to heavy lifting. Care may include pain control, activity guidance, a brace in selected cases, and a plan for bone health such as Bisphosphonate Therapy when indicated. Persistent pain or selected fractures may lead to discussion of Kyphoplasty or Vertebroplasty; these procedures are not suitable for every fracture.

Seek emergency care for new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to stand, or severe pain after major trauma. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when sudden back pain follows a minor event, because a spinal fracture can occur without a dramatic injury.

Ask which vertebra is affected, whether nerves are involved, how much activity is safe, whether bone-density evaluation is needed, and why a procedure or medication is being recommended.
