Which specialist treats genital herpes?

A GP can examine sores, discuss symptoms and arrange testing or treatment. A sexual-health clinician is experienced in sexually transmitted infections and can provide confidential assessment, partner advice and prevention guidance. A dermatologist may help when the diagnosis is uncertain or skin symptoms are persistent; a gynaecologist or urologist may be involved when genital or urinary complications need focused care.

Genital herpes can cause blisters, ulcers, vulval pain or painful urination, but other conditions can look similar. Examination during an outbreak may help identify the cause.

Arrange a GP Consultation or sexual-health appointment promptly, particularly while sores or blisters are present. Avoid sexual contact until you have received advice, and do not share towels or touch affected skin unnecessarily. Ask about STI Screening and whether a partner should be assessed. Take prescribed antiviral medicine exactly as directed.

Seek same-day advice for severe pain, difficulty passing urine, extensive sores, pregnancy, a weakened immune system or symptoms involving the eyes. Urgent care is needed for eye pain or vision changes, fever with marked illness, or inability to urinate. Do not wait for an outbreak to settle if symptoms are rapidly worsening.
