Which specialist treats an ankle fracture?

An orthopaedic doctor examines alignment, skin, circulation, sensation, and movement. X-rays and sometimes further imaging show which bones are broken and whether the joint is stable. A stable injury may be treated with a walking boot or fracture cast. A displaced or unstable fracture may need fracture fixation surgery to restore alignment and hold the bones while they heal.

After immobilisation or surgery, a physiotherapist helps restore ankle movement, calf strength, balance, and walking confidence.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for suspected fracture rather than trying to test the ankle by walking on it. Keep it supported and raised, avoid weight-bearing unless instructed, and do not attempt to straighten a visibly abnormal ankle. Bring details of the injury and any medicines or allergies to the appointment.
