Which specialist performs stereotactic radiosurgery?

Short answer

A radiation oncologist usually leads stereotactic radiosurgery with a team that plans and delivers highly focused radiation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Lead specialist
Radiation oncologist
Key planning roles
Medical physicist and radiation therapist
Treatment type
Focused radiation, usually without an incision

What the specialist does

The radiation oncologist reviews scans, confirms whether focused radiation fits the treatment plan and defines the target. A medical physicist checks the dose and equipment calculations, while radiation therapists position you and operate the treatment system. A neurosurgeon, neuroradiologist or other disease-specific specialist may join the planning when the target location or diagnosis calls for it. Despite its name, stereotactic radiosurgery generally uses radiation rather than an incision.

How to prepare

Bring scan reports, medication details and information about previous radiation or surgery. Ask whether you need a mask, frame or other positioning device, how movement will be managed, and whether treatment is planned for one visit or a series of visits. Tell the team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, implanted devices, seizures, blood-thinning medicines and difficulty lying still. Confirm how and when follow-up imaging will be arranged.

When to seek medical help

Follow the treatment centre's instructions about expected effects and contact details. Seek prompt advice for a severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, new weakness, trouble speaking, a seizure, confusion, vision changes or marked drowsiness after treatment. Emergency help is appropriate for a seizure that does not stop, sudden severe weakness, collapse or major breathing difficulty. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Questions to ask

Will a radiation oncologist lead my treatment, and which other specialists will review the plan? What area is being treated and why is this focused approach suitable? What positioning equipment will I use? Which symptoms should prompt an urgent call, and who receives my follow-up scans?

Questions people ask

Does a neurosurgeon perform stereotactic radiosurgery?

A neurosurgeon may help assess or plan treatment, but the radiation oncologist usually leads radiation delivery with the specialist team.

Is stereotactic radiosurgery always one treatment visit?

No. The radiation team decides whether the plan uses one session or several based on the target and treatment goals.
