Which specialist performs pelvic ultrasound?

A sonographer is trained to capture ultrasound images and assess the areas requested on the referral. The examination may be performed through the lower abdomen with gel and a handheld probe. Some pelvic examinations use an internal probe when clinically appropriate; the team should explain this beforehand and obtain your consent.

The reporting doctor may be a radiologist, gynaecologist, or another clinician with suitable ultrasound expertise, depending on the centre and the purpose of the scan. Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation and can show the uterus, ovaries, bladder, pregnancy-related structures, fluid, or blood flow.

Ask the imaging centre whether you need a comfortably full bladder, an empty bladder, or another preparation. Wear clothing that allows access to the lower abdomen, and mention pregnancy, pelvic pain, bleeding, or discomfort with internal examinations. You can request a chaperone and ask questions before agreeing to an internal scan.

Bring the referral details and any earlier reports if requested. Ask who will receive the result and whether the sonographer can explain what happens next, since the final interpretation may come from the reporting clinician.

Seek prompt medical assessment for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, or pain with a possible pregnancy. These symptoms should not be delayed while arranging routine imaging. Tell the sonographer if pain becomes intense during the examination, and contact a clinician if you develop worsening pain, fever, or unusual bleeding afterwards.
