Which specialist performs pap smear?

A Pap smear, also called a Pap test or cervical screening test, collects cells from the cervix for laboratory examination. The clinician explains the procedure, asks about your menstrual cycle and relevant symptoms, and uses a speculum to see the cervix. A small sampling brush then collects cells. You may feel pressure or brief cramping, and light spotting can occur afterward.

The test is designed to identify cervical cell changes that may need monitoring or further assessment. It does not diagnose every cause of pelvic symptoms. The clinician can explain when the result is expected, how it will be shared, and what follow-up might be recommended if the sample is unclear or changes are found.

When booking, ask whether the clinic has timing instructions related to your period, vaginal medicines, or recent procedures. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, have unusual bleeding, have had cervical surgery, or find examinations difficult. You can ask for a smaller speculum, a different position, a chaperone, or a pause. Bring details of previous screening results if available, and make sure the clinic knows how to contact you with the result.

A Pap smear is a screening test, not an urgent assessment. Arrange prompt medical review for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods or after menopause, unusual discharge, persistent pelvic pain, or pain during sex. After the test, seek advice for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or symptoms that are worsening. Do not assume these symptoms are explained by a screening result; they need their own clinical assessment.
