During the examination, the clinician gently places a gloved finger through the cervix, when it is open enough, and separates the membranes from the lower part of the uterus. This may release local substances that can encourage the body to begin labour. A sweep is different from breaking the waters and does not involve medication. It may cause pressure, cramping, or light bleeding, and the clinician should explain what to expect before starting.

Ask your maternity team whether a sweep is appropriate for your gestational stage, cervix, and pregnancy history. You can decline or pause the examination at any time. Wear comfortable clothing and consider using a sanitary pad afterwards if there is spotting. Contact your maternity unit if you are unsure whether bleeding or contractions are within the expected range, or if you need advice about when to return.

Seek prompt advice for heavy bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, fluid that may be your waters, or noticeably reduced fetal movement. If contractions become regular and stronger, contact your maternity unit for instructions based on your pregnancy and birth plan. Do not wait for a routine appointment when you feel acutely unwell.
