Which specialist performs lactation consultation?

The midwife asks about feeding, your baby’s pattern, wet nappies, birth history, and any medicines or health conditions. They may observe a feed, assess positioning and attachment, and help you find a comfortable hold. The discussion can include expressing milk, managing fullness, protecting milk supply, combination feeding, and returning to work.

A lactation consultant supports feeding but does not replace medical care. A midwife can identify concerns that need referral to a doctor, paediatrician, or other clinician.

Book with a midwife or lactation professional who can provide a clear plan and follow-up. Keep notes about feeds, wet nappies, pain, and any supplements, and bring your feeding equipment if the appointment is in person. Feed your baby in the usual way if possible so the consultant can see what is happening.

Expect practical guidance rather than a single fixed technique. Small changes to positioning or attachment may be tested, then adjusted according to your comfort and your baby’s response.
